The Role of Diagnostic Imaging in the Prevention and Management of Post-Treatment Complications of Breast Cancer: An Integrated Perspective for Rehabilitators and Psychologists
Authors: Teresa Abbattista
Introduction: The comprehensive post-treatment management of breast cancer patients requires the fundamental role of diagnostic imaging, which integrates with the work of rehabilitation professionals and psychologists.
Methods: Various imaging techniques, including ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, and lymphoscintigraphy, are used for the early identification and precise monitoring of the most common post-treatment complications of breast cancer. These imaging findings directly guide and optimize rehabilitation interventions for conditions such as lymphedema, post-radiotherapy fibrosis, scar adhesions, and musculoskeletal dysfunction. Furthermore, the psychological impact of fear of complications may be benefited by diagnostic clarity, which can alleviate patient anxiety, while post-reconstruction imaging influences body image and self-perception, thus contributing to overall psychological well-being.
Conclusion: Diagnostic imaging is an indispensable tool for both the prevention and management of post-treatment complications of breast cancer. An integrated approach that fosters interdisciplinary communication is essential to optimize patient rehabilitation outcomes and improve psychological well-being.
