The maintenance of oral health is of vital interest and can be achieved mainly by mechanical and chemical means. Despite the widespread use of toothbrushes and dentifrices, natural methods of tooth cleaning
using herbal “chewing sticks” is common in several parts of the world. Salvadora persica L., also known as Arak (in Arabic) is the most common traditional source of chewing stick (Miswak) and highly recommended by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). It is used by Muslim peoples as a natural product for the cleansing of teeth, to ensure the oral and dental hygiene.
Several scientific studies have demonstrated that the miswak (Salvadora persica) possesses antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-cariogenic, and anti-plaque properties. Other studies have also showed that miswak has anti-oxidant, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory effects. The use of a miswak has an immediate
