Abstract

The generation of agricultural waste presents a significant environmental and economic challenge, particularly in regions heavily reliant on agriculture. However, these by-products also offer opportunities for innovation in medicine, especially within the realm of traditional and herbal therapies. This study focuses on the external Peels of Pistacia vera (Aleppo pistachio), an abundant agricultural waste product in Syria, and their potential in developing sustainable plant-based medicinal treatments. A comprehensive chemical analysis revealed a high concentration of phenolic compounds in the pistachio Peels, which were subsequently used to formulate a topical cream for the adjunctive treatment of leishmaniasis and eczema, both prevalent skin conditions. The cream was evaluated in preclinical trials on rats and later in human studies, demonstrating promising therapeutic outcomes. The research not only highlights the potential of repurposing agricultural waste for medicinal purposes but also aligns with global efforts to promote sustainable development by minimizing waste and innovating in the field of plant-based therapies.
