The current study aims to review the literature that dealt with the concept of working memory, from its first appearance in the Atkinson-Shiffrin model for information processing, passing through Engel’s model of inhibitory control, the long-term working memory model, and Cowan’s theory of embedded processes, until the most famous and widespread model, which is the Baddeley-Hitch model. (1974) and then its recent modifications in the years 2012 and 2019, which is currently known as the multi-component speculative model. In this context, the researcher provides a detailed presentation of each model and a critical reading for these models in light of developments in cognitive psychology. The Baddeley-Hitch model also devotes a great deal of focus and study because of its scientific importance, as the majority of studies and research that deal with working memory, with its various starting points and orientations, adopt this model. The researcher also provides a self-reading of the latest amendment that was proposed to this model in the year 2019 in light of the latest scientific trends and in light of the correspondence between the researcher and the model’s creator, the British cognitive psychologist.
